Book 1 of A Black Ship Into Hades
Louise Turner’s third novel is the first in a genre-blending series that Louise describes as ‘archaeological fantasy.’ Yes, it’s a time travel novel, yes, it nods towards historical fiction, yes, it’s got a bit of romance, but the kind of romance you’d find amongst what the author would class as a ‘favourite romantic read,’ which in her case include George Orwell’s ‘1984‘ and C J Cherryh’s ‘RimRunners‘…
It’s set partly in Ancient Sparta, and partly in modern England. Lysander is a young Spartan who finds himself trafficked into the future. Can he adapt? Does he even want to adapt? Or will the old Spartan instincts win out – a glorious heroic death must surely be preferable to a peaceful, happy and uneventful life…..
In Underworld, Part 1, we first meet Lysander, and discover how he gets trafficked to the future, and what happens when he gets there. We also meet Lucy, a 21st century English girl who knows him, and is waiting for him.
The gods have seen this coming, and have prepared the way for him. But…. the gods being the gods, nothing is ever straightforward, and every hero has to confront all manner of challenges before he can say he’s triumphed….
